E-Bike Rental FAQ

+ I have never ridden an E-Bike. What do I need to know?

Until the assist is turned on, our e-Bikes operate exactly the same as a non eBike! You have brakes, gears, and pedals. Once the assist is enabled, you can choose a level of assist that enables you to overcome hills or windy conditions without over-exertion!

We provide a safety and operational orientation with you before you leave, so that you are comfortable with the bike and it’s controls and have a safe and enjoyable experience.

+ Do I need a reservation?

Online booking is highly recommended. You save time, money, and your bike is reserved for the date and time you choose. Reservations are made online at clearlakemarina.ca. We cannot take reservations by telephone, as you must read, understand, and sign the rental terms and waiver electronically. Each person must sign the terms and waiver.

+ Which model should I choose?

We offer two types of ebikes. The Kutty X is at home on both trails and pavement, and is the best choice for single track or non-groomed trail riding. The Stunner LT is a comfort cruiser style, which offers superior comfort and is ideal for longer rides, groomed or light trail riding or pavement.

+ Can I get a rental at any time of the day?

Rentals are available from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM, and bikes are all returned by 5:00 PM. Online bookings, payment, and waiver signing are highly recommended. You will save time, money, and be guaranteed a bike, when you want it. Walkups are permitted on an as-available basis, but you may need to wait while we serve pre-booked customers who have priority.

+ Should I come early?

If you arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled reservation, we can complete the, deposit, and safety checklist so that you get the full benefit of your rental period. If you arrive late, we may not be able to extend your rental return period.

+ Is there a minimum age to rent an ebike?

Yes. Our minimum age to rent an eBike is 18 years old. The minimum age to ride an ebike is 14 year old.

+ How do I pay?

For online bookings (recommended), you must pay with a credit card. Bookings made without payment cannot be guaranteed. A security deposit is required at time of pickup – this is best done by credit card pre-authorization, which we release when the equipment is returned undamaged.

For walk up rentals, you may pay by credit card or debit card, but be aware that if paying by debit then the security deposit will come out of your bank account and must then be re-funded when the equipment is returned undamaged.

We cannot accept cash for rental or damage deposits.

+ What do I need to bring for payment?

You need a valid credit card and one other piece of identification that matches the card. We must do a pre-authorization on the credit card for the security deposit.

+ Do I need to wear a helmet?

Yes, it is the law. We can provide a helmet, but if you have your own, we strongly encourage you to bring it.

+ What else do I need to wear?

Closed toe footwear (no sandals) is recommended for safety, and a cell phone in case of emergency. Weather appropriate clothing would also be a good idea, preferably layers that you can remove as you exercise! Bikes have kit bags for snacks and water, and Burlee Bee trailers have room for your children’s gear.

+ Where can we go?

We’d like you to stay within 15km or so, on streets, paved trails, and appropriate allowed trails within and close to the townsite. We do not currently allow bikes to be transported to other areas of the park. Bikes are well suited to local conditions, and we need to be able to respond should you need assistance for any reason. There are some restrictions on bike and ebike use in the park, so please read more on that further down.

+ Can I return the bike early?

In some circumstances there may not be anyone available to do and inspection, close your rental, and release your deposit. In such case, there will be a posted phone number to call and we can instruct you.

+ Will your e-bikes run without pedaling?

No. We disable the throttle to meet RMNP trail regulations (more on that below). All of our e-Bikes are pedal assist – the assistance stops when you stop pedaling.

+ How far can I go on a single battery charge?

The range depends on many factors such as weight, road conditions, bicycle, weather, level of assist, and amount of muscle power being used. In general, good estimates are 50 km for Kutty and 70 km for Stunner as long as the assist is not being abused.

+ What happens if the battery is exhausted?

You can continue your ride with muscle power, but without the electric assist.

+ How fast can electric bikes go?

The legal maximum assisted speed setting to be on the street is 32km/h. We however further restrict the maximum speed so that the controller will cut-off assist beyond 25km/h to respect the national park environment we all enjoy. Power is restricted to 500W to comply with the law, which gives good performance on hills.

+ Can I ride in the rain?

Yes, you can. The E-Bikes are designed to be used outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. You should however avoid puddles, splashing, and never submerge any part of the bike in water.

+ Do I need a license to ride on the road?

Vehicle and drivers licenses are not required. You do however need to know and respect the rules of the road, they apply equally to all motor vehicles, ebikes, and bikes.

+ What if there is an issue or emergency?

We provide you with a phone number to call should you need assistance.

+ Does Riding Mountain National Park have any restrictions on E-Bike use?

Yes. Our ebikes are specifically configured to meet National Park regulations. As a rider, you need to know and follow the additional restrictions or face Parks Canada issued penalties/ fines. Please follow the link below for RMNP's E-Bike regulations.
